4 RIFLES is a Regular Infantry Battalion based in New Normandy Barracks, Aldershot and is one of just two infantry units to pilot the new and exciting Specialised Infantry Battalion (SpIB) role. SpIBs are expeditionary by design, capable and credible and will plan to have an element always deployed on operations. 4 RIFLES trains, advises, assists, mentors and accompanies the soldiers of overseas partners, helping them to develop their own capability and prevent crisis. 4 RIFLES has been given the British Army's SpIB responsibility for the Middle East and began training for its new role in 2017.
4 RIFLES consists of about 200 Riflemen, mainly officers and NCOs, drawn from across the other battalions of The Rifles - giving all Riflemen serving across the Regiment the opportunity to serve in the exciting SpIB role. Selection for service in 4 RIFLES involves an assessment to identify Riflemen that are physically robust, culturally diverse and comfortable operating on their initiative. The likelihood of an operational deployment whilst serving with 4 RIFLES is high, with bespoke language and military training and a readiness cycle organised to match this specialised role.
Since The Rifles formed in 2007, 4 RIFLES has deployed on 5 tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, together with numerous other operations and training missions worldwide.
Aldershot, being close to London, has very good transport connections to the whole of the UK.
